Twitter Plans To Increase 140 Character Limit

According to re/code Twitter is building a new product that will allow users to share tweets that are longer than the company’s 140-character limit, according to multiple sources who are familiar with the company’s plans. If these rumors are true then this could totally change how Twitter works which will affect all of us.

The 140 character limit has been a feature of Twitter that sets the site apart from other social networks as it pushes you to articulate your tweets in a specific way, but the decision to have the character count so limited has been scrutinized by many and the possibility of extending the character limit has been a hot topic for many, many years. As many people have been put off from joining Twitter due to the strict character count CEO Jack Dorsey has been formulating new ways to entice more people to join and gain more of a main-stream audience.

It’s unclear what the product will look like, but sources say it would enable Twitter users to publish long-form content to the service. Users can already tweet out blocks of text with products like TwitLonger to increase the word count but half of the tweet is still obscured and you have to click on a short url to see the rest of the tweet.

Twitter is possibly one of the biggest social media sites. In the latter half of 2015 there is  over 304 million monthly active users and over 500 million users world-wide
